Early this morning we scaled a giant sand dune outside of
Dunhuang. Some of these dunes are over 1700 meters. The dune summit
rewarded us with a great view of the "Crescent Lake," a natural oasis
created from spring water trickling into the huge depression between
the dunes.

Crescent Lake View (it's more of a pond but here in the
desert anything over pool size is a lake). |

Bactrian (two-humped) camels and their herders will give
you a ride to the dunes for 20 yuan ($2.50). That's a fortune around
here, so we walked.
