| Today we arrived in Foumban, our first substantial town since leaving Maroua six days ago. We walked on a paved road in town. We found a palace here from old African kings. Inside we saw a throne decorated with the skull and jawbones of vanquished foes. People here are serious about interior decorating. Best of all we showered for the first time in a week. Having a shower, even a cold one, has become so rare it deserves a special ceremony.

| Foumban palace, nice on the outside, but the interior decorating that features spears and skulls really sets it apart. |

| Don't argue with the butcher about prices. He's holding a cleaver. |
 |
| Camping by a sewer in an alley. We'll never complain about Holiday Inn again. |
