Previous Day September 11, 2001 Next Day
We rented a car for an affordable $10 US per day and left Port Elizabeth on the coastal road to Cape Town, the road better known as the Garden Route. We drove through famous surf spots like Jeffires Bay. We stopped at Tsitsikama, called the garden spot of the Garden Route. Then we turned away from the coast and ended up in South Africa's ostrich capital, Oudtshoorn. Here we heard the horrible news about the terrorist bombings in the United States. Shocked. Dismayed. Since South Africa is pro-American, we had no concern for our own safety; our thoughts turned to home. Most South African stores close at dusk, so we had no access to Internet. We watched the TV and listened to the radio until we fell asleep in the early morning hours.
