Next Day
(Hiking time: 6 hours) Our goal today: expose our bodies to thin air. From the Shira plateau we climb towards the lava tower, or shark's tooth, and spend an hour at 4600 meters to acclimate our bodies to high altitude. Then we descend to the Baranco campsite at 3800 meters. On a climb your mind is obsessed with altitude - your body feels it too.
As tired as we may be, we don't have to carry bags on our heads.
These lobelia trees are hundreds of years old. Strange to find a forest 3800 meters above sea level.
Each campsite has provided great Kilimanjaro views.
