From Nakuru we drove to Elsamere, the home of conservationist Joy Adams, artist and author of "Born Free," the story about Elsa the domesticated lion. Elsa and Adams had a remarkable relationship; movies show the two playing together, a human and lion living in harmony with one another. Adams died in 1989, murdered by her Kenyan bodyguard. At Elsamere a museum preserves her memory; her portraits of Kenyan natives hang in the Nairobi National Museum. |
Colobus monkeys still come to Joy's garden for a visit and snack. |
