From killing fields we seek calmer pastures. Cambodia has Southeast Asia's worst road system. The glorious Khmer revolution didn't include making smooth pathways. We ride across Cambodia's belly, an upset stomach from so many bumps and potholes, a slow, 10 hour journey from Phnom Penh to Angkor in the northwest. We enjoy interesting culinary moments to further our digestive distress. A breakfast stop introduces us to a local speciality, fried tarantula. Actually, bugs of every description - cockroaches, grasshoppers, worms, larvae - can be eaten, but these are sidedishes compared to tarantula steak. |
Platefuls of fried tarantula in garlic and oil. Finger
lickin' good!
|
What does it taste like? Hairy chicken.
|
What vegetable goes with a plate of insects? An unidentified
pea pod.
