Malaysian Borneo contains two states: Sarawak in the south and Sabah in the north. Tourist brochures claim that Sabah offers "scenic grandeur and fascinating wildlife," a more upscale version of Sarawak. But what makes it really irresistible is the fact that Air Asia flies to Sabah for less money than it takes to buy a guidebook. Twenty US dollars is sufficient for airfare. So with a few bucks we bought our tickets and arrived in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah's capital city. Compared to Kuching, Kota Kinabalu isn't nearly so scenic. We hope the wildlife in the surrounding jungle turns out to be fascinating.
